This week, with Vivian not around and Giselle on holiday, our class was rather small. However, we still had the same amount of fun! Our topic for the week was about caterpillar and butterfly. Thanks to the help of Matteus and his family, we got a live caterpillar in class!
Everyday, Ms. Angela would bring it out and show it to us. It’s really fun to look at it move. We even saw something that was black and round at the bottom. Do you know what it was? It was the motion of the caterpillar! Now I learned caterpillar passed motion too!
In class, we learnt about the lifecycle of the butterfly: from an egg, it turned into a caterpillar. After which, it became a pupa and then, a pretty butterfly! Vera, Asher and Owen were pretty familiar with the lifecycle where as the rest of us forgot about the pupa until we were give clues! A baby caterpillar would come out from an egg and after which, it would eat lots and lots of leaves and when it’s done eating, it would find a branch and rest. While resting, it would turn into a pupa and in this stage; it would slowly turn into a butterfly! I couldn’t wait to see the caterpillar turn into a butterfly.
Ms. Angela even got so panicky when it didn’t eat. Only after that, we realised that caterpillar only eats leaves that they like. Not just any other leaves. What a fussy eater! Ms. Angela got a fact book about the lifecycle of a butterfly from the library and it was very interesting. For certain words in the book like caterpillar, butterfly, flower, leaves, garden, etc; it was being replaced by the respective photo. Ms. Angela read the book to us as usual and stops only when the picture is there. Every one of us contributed to help reading out the picture! You bet we had fun doing it. There wasn’t a picture that any of us couldn’t read. Weren’t we bright little children?
Jovan also got us a book called Ten little caterpillar. This was a counting book whereby the 10 caterpillars were doing different activities. We helped to read too! When Ms. Angela paused, we would call out the activity the caterpillar was doing. Was pretty fun especially when all of us called out together! For phonics, we learnt about letter “r” where “r” was for rose, rain, raincoat and rats. Ms. Angela also read us a story book titled “The worm family”.
It was about a family of worms who decided to find a place to stay. However, other insects disliked them and throw things at them and made them move house (again). After moving house for about 2 times, Uncle Herm decided that they should not be afraid of them and they decided to stay. They went out and did lots of things. One day, a new insect family that just moved there rang the bell of the door. Uh oh! They thought that someone was here to drive them out again. But little did they know, their new neighbour was actually a worm too (but a different one)! Their favourite chant was “we’re worms and we’re proud. We’re long and we’re loud!”
For math, we did a revision of what we learnt. Like long and short, big and small, numbers 1 and 2, colours and shapes. We hade no problems with our numbers and can count them pretty well. However, some of us are a little confused about the colours green and blue. Mummy and daddy, maybe you could help me out at home too? The library has wonderful books about colours. Maybe we could make a trip to the library some time soon?
For craft, we did our own worksheet of long and short where we paste 1 strip of ribbon that’s of different length. We did painting on a piece of hard paper and it was being cut into a butterfly. We then used some foam shapes to paste onto the wing and boy, is it pretty!If you realise, our theme board was a little empty and……….. Ms. Angela decided that we should do something with it. That was, to have art on the board! Vera, Yong Teck and Matteus had a go at the butterfly while Asher, Jovan and Amanda had did the bee. Owen, Vivian and Giselle took charge of the caterpillar. It was something different and Vera even re-enacted the scene of printing the butterfly to Owen after nap! Here’s the photo:

For cookery, we had a cooking demonstration on popcorn. Ms. Joanna did the demonstration for us! We were very eager to see (and eat). All of us cheered when we saw the popcorn popping out when Ms. Joanna opened the lid!
